Modern Africa : 1:54 Contemporary Art Fair

Having already introduced some of the exhibitions that are giving a platform to contemporary African art this month, next we focus on Somerset House’s 1:54 Contemporary Art Fair running alongside Frieze Week. The name takes inspiration from the 54 countries on the continent and is designed to create a platform for 70 visual artists.

Designed by David Adjaye, it will also include live interviews with contemporary heavyweights such as Baudouin Mouanda and Godfried Donkor. Galleries and curators based in the various counties will also be giving talks; one name that popped out was The Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos on bringing contemporary african art to a Western market.

However the space dedicated to talks is much too small, with many people being turned away. It’s almost as if Somerset House did not expect much interest in this, which is a shame, and makes their attempt at curating this exhibition look rather disorganised and arbitrary for such an established gallery.

The exhibition runs from 16 October to 23 October.
